An HVAC specialist performing maintenance on a furnace in North Vancouver

Why Summer Furnace Maintenance Can Help You Save Money Next Winter

Most people only think about their home’s furnace when the weather gets colder. But plumbers in North Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland agree, if you want to keep your furnace in peak operating condition for years to come, you need to add summer furnace maintenance to your to-do list. Keep reading for a couple of steps you can take to keep your furnace in top condition all year round.

Freshen Up The Filter

If you’ve been running the furnace all winter long, chances are, it’ll need to be changed come spring. Rather than leaving the old, dusty filter on until next winter, remove the old one and replace it with a clean filter at the beginning of summer.

Clean The Area
While you’re changing the filter, it’s a good time to do a little warm weather cleaning and tidy the space around your furnace. Clear away any clutter surrounding your furnace and vacuum up dust or debris that settled in over the winter. You can also wipe down the outside of the unit to reduce the buildup of grime.

Summer Damage
Believe it or not, the warmer weather can be hard on your furnace’s filter and duct system. Most people like to open their windows during the warmer weather to let some fresh air into their home. While this can be refreshing, by doing so, you’re also letting in a lot of dust and dirt. Add pollen, pet dander and other airborne allergens to the mix, and your furnace’s filter will have a hard time keeping up.

Preventive Maintenance
By doing a little bit of preventive maintenance throughout the summer, you’ll reduce your chances of having your furnace breakdown when the weather gets colder and you need it the most.

Change the filters on your home’s HVAC system at least twice a year, once in the winter and once in the spring. If you have pets, or if someone in your home suffers from asthma or allergies, then you’ll need to change the filter more often. Not sure how to do it?
